abstract = "Monitoring of crop growth condition is relevant for crop yield
estimation. Time series of vegetation indices derived from remote
sensing satellite imagery provide important information on crop
growth conditions. The present work aims to monitor key sugarcane
growing periods at different cutting stages using NDVI/MODIS time
series to provide information on sugarcane growing conditions. The
study was carried out in S{\~a}o Paulo state for crop years
                         2006/07, 2007/08, and 2008/09. The 16-days composites of NDVI,
MOD13Q1 product, were filtered using the 4253H, Twice smoother. A
sampling grid (250x250 m) of pure pixels was generated for
sugarcane fields at different cutting stage. This grid was used to
monitor the NDVI evolution, as well as the NDVI sum, every 16
days, during the sugarcane growing season from October to March
(12 observations). NDVI ranged between 0.1 and 0.9 during the 12
observations in each of the three evaluated crop years. The NDVI
sums indicated significant differences for sugarcane cutting
stage. In addition, sugarcane at same cutting stages presented
different NDVI values in different crop years. Therefore, it is
possible to monitor sugarcane growing condition using NDVI/MODIS
time series that can be used to estimate key input biophysical
variables for agronomic crop yield models.",
